- ➤ Oakland officials unveiled a ballot proposal to lower taxes on small businesses and offer tax breaks for new companies starting in 2027— the plan exempts small businesses earning less than $1 million from the business license tax and removes the tax for new businesses, saving them between $60 and $4,100 a year; the measure could appear on the June 2026 ballot if approved by the council. - ➤ UC Regents approved a plan on Wednesday that will let Berkeley and other campuses raise freshman tuition and campus fees by up to 5% each year (the cohort tuition plan) to cover rising costs.
