Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of November.
Good morning, Oakland.
Bay Area retailers will extend their hours on Black Friday to help shoppers get deals on essentials and premium items—KTVU’s list shows times for malls, outlets, and chain stores while some restaurants open on Thanksgiving for early dining.
Shoppers are advised to check specific store schedules as many locations plan to open early and close late.
Oakland officials unveiled a ballot proposal to lower taxes on small businesses and offer tax breaks for new companies starting in 2027— the plan exempts small businesses earning less than $1 million from the business license tax and removes the tax for new businesses, saving them between $60 and $4,100 a year; the measure could appear on the June 2026 ballot if approved by the council.
UC Regents approved a plan on Wednesday that will let Berkeley and other campuses raise freshman tuition and campus fees by up to 5% each year (the cohort tuition plan) to cover rising costs.
Many students opposed the measure while officials say it is expected to generate $273 million in additional revenue next fall.
The Oakland Unified School District board is reviewing two proposals to cut $100 million from next year's budget amid challenges at local schools—each plan would eliminate central office jobs and must be decided by Dec.
10. Leaders warn that without these cuts, the district may face state control if its financial issues are not resolved.
The Golden State Warriors, playing without key veterans on November 19 in Miami, held a two-point lead before a stalled fourth quarter led to a 110-96 loss.
They ended the six-game road trip at 3-3 as substitutes including Podziemski and Post stepped up—helped by veteran advice—and coach Kerr said the loss showed they still have room to improve.
Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is set to play his first Big Game against Stanford on Saturday — he has thrown for 2,518 yards, 13 touchdowns, and nine interceptions this season.
Although NIL offers create temptation for other programs, Cal general manager Ron Rivera said he is confident Sagapolutele will remain with the Bears next season.
Golden State Warriors rookie Will Richard, who in seventh grade wrote a poem about playing with Stephen Curry, scored 30 points in his first career start—fulfilling his childhood dream as his family praised his hard work and ease in adjusting to the NBA.
