Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 15th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oakland will host a series of events themed around resistance—starting with a No Kings rally on Oct 18 at Wilma Chan Park and a screening of the documentary 'The Apology' on Oct 19 at OMCA that examines the history of Russell City. Residents can also visit the 'Resistance and Resilience' exhibit at National Nurses United HQ, Laura Malone’s solo art show at Mercury Twenty Gallery, and a family-friendly marketplace on Piedmont Avenue.  The Oaklandside
  • Gray Loft Gallery in Oakland’s Jingletown is hosting the exhibition 'Aligned' featuring work by six local women artists and it runs through Nov. 8 (at 2889 Ford St.).  East Bay Express
  • Oakland vocalist Melanie DeMore debuted her new 14-track album, How to Hold On: Songs of Comfort and Solace, last month — performed a cappella with Minnesota choral group VocalEssence to offer listeners peace amid uncertainty. The album blends African-American folk, soulful ballads and spirituals to show music's power to connect people — reflecting her work as a longtime music educator and activist in Oakland.  East Bay Express
  • Oakland’s Exhale Collective closed its year-long residency with a Love Communion event at the West Oakland Library on August 30—where Black women gathered to share their stories and breathe deeply. The group ended its residency with the Betti Ono Foundation and will resume in-person events next year.  Oakland Voices

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention is teaming with the Urban Peace Institute to build a violence interruption academy that will train up to 25 community members per cohort (starting in 2027). The four-year contract ($1M) funds technical help and will support four training sessions through 2029.  The Oaklandside

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thousands of Kaiser workers in Oakland walked off the job yesterday in a five-day strike over staffing and pay concerns, with about 300 workers protesting at Kaiser’s main hospital at 7 a.m. Kaiser said hospitals and clinics will remain open—temporary staff will fill gaps until the strike ends Sunday at 7 a.m.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Parents in the Bay Area are urging lawmakers to ban synthetic kratom after the potent opioid 7-OH—sold like candy and easily available in local stores—has led to a surge in youth addiction. Health officials say regulators are considering emergency measures as this unregulated drug raises fears of a new opioid crisis.  SFGate
  • Today, Covered California will send open enrollment letters warning enrollees that 2026 premiums may rise nearly 97% if Congress does not extend federal subsidies, which may force many to lose affordable health coverage. The delay in issuing the letters reflects ongoing uncertainty as lawmakers remain divided—posing a financial challenge for families.  San Francisco Chronicle
