EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland Tech held a ceremony last week to unveil its $1.4M auditorium upgrade, funded over 20 years by a parent committee — the modern venue now features new seats, sound, and lighting systems that will support the revived performing arts program.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rain will break Oakland’s dry spell with light showers beginning Wednesday morning and a stronger storm arriving Friday into Saturday to bring more substantial rain and lower Sierra snow levels — though rainfall totals in Oakland will remain modest. HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by UCSF and Northwestern found that heavy tanning bed use in youth caused irreversible genetic damage in skin cells and increased mutation rates, which may lead to melanoma. Experts advise Bay Area residents to avoid tanning beds.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Cal is rethinking its football future after former quarterback Fernando Mendoza (the first Cal alum to win the Heisman) transferred to Indiana and returning quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele stayed.
