  • Mother Tongue Cafe and Bar in Oakland was named the best coffee shop in the East Bay by Nosh Awards voters—crediting owner Jen Apodaca’s two decades of roasting expertise—and opened in April 2023 in the Jewel Box neighborhood. The cafe offers a full menu of coffee, cocktails and pastries while paying above-standard prices to coffee growers.  The Oaklandside

  • Oakland archivist Esperanza Bey received the 2025 Nomadic Archivist Project Scholarship to fund her archival work on Black memory and displacement — the award will support the creation of a website for her project Fragments of a Bip, which she co-created with her sister.  Oakland Voices
  • Oakland will host many holiday events this week with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir performing its 40th holiday concert on Dec. 6 at the Paramount Theatre and Cantare holding its 'Lead with Love' show on Dec. 7 at First Presbyterian Church. Other local events include a Bandaloop aerial show (Dec. 5 to Dec. 7 at 1601 18th St), a Kwanzaa celebration (Dec. 6 at 2750 73rd Ave), a Social Justice Children’s Book Fair (Dec. 6 at Emerson Elementary), and STOMP's 30th anniversary shows (Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 at Henry J.   • San Francisco rents rose sharply as AI startups boosted demand and the surge spilled into Oakland, where rents increased 3% (with similar gains in San Mateo and Berkeley) amid a tight housing market.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Thirteen Bay Area high school football teams will compete for Northern California titles Friday and Saturday (game times range from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.) with matchups like Riordan-San Francisco at Folsom and Piedmont Hills-San Jose at Balboa.   • Golden State Warriors and Valkyries owner Joe Lacob may consider buying the San Diego Padres if the team is put up for sale, as the Seidler family evaluates its future with the franchise.
