Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 3rd of December.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Teresa Williams recalled a school field trip to Oakland Airport at the Black Panther Party’s Oakland Community School where she dreamed of flying high despite a hard childhood. Now a teacher and geologist, she said her early struggles have shaped her commitment to helping others in Oakland.  Oakland Voices
  • A busy week of live entertainment will take place from Dec. 4 to 10 in local venues across Berkeley, Oakland, and Alameda—featuring rock shows, jazz gigs, hip-hop concerts, comedy, and musical theater. Headliners include The Meaty Ogres at Cornerstone on Dec. 4 and John Legend at Paramount Theatre on Dec. 9.  East Bay Express
  • Takai Ginwright promoted his short film Mantras At Midnight at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theatre as a red marquee displayed its title and he told his grandmother about it; the film premiered in Los Angeles on Nov. 15 and will be submitted to festivals in 2026 (he funded it with savings and gig work).  East Bay Express

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters warn that high tides, coastal flooding, and dangerous surf will affect the Bay Area beginning Friday and lasting through Sunday — low-lying neighborhoods may see water rise up to 1.4 feet while strong rip currents and sneaker waves heighten the risk — and first responders advise people to avoid the water.  KTVU
  • The East Bay Regional Park District plans a 1.4-mile mountain bike trail at Wildcat Canyon amid claims that staff held secret meetings with mountain bikers and donors — critics worry the plan will hurt the park's calm and natural look. An Environmental Impact Report will be prepared in January to allow public input and address concerns over traffic and air pollution.  East Bay Express

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Giving Tuesday, KTVU Fox 2 partnered with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland to raise funds for children like 9-year-old cancer survivor Penny DeBoer—whose foster family found hope and care at the hospital. Donations helped fund lifesaving treatments for all children regardless of insurance.  KTVU

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A Condé Nast Traveler survey ranked Oakland as the nation's best city for food after more than 757K votes were cast. Mayor Barbara Lee said the ranking shows that Oakland's small businesses and varied kitchens make the city unique — a win for local flavor.  KTVU
  • La Loulou opened in May on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland and earned praise from Nosh voters for its French look and a fun, disco-ball covered bathroom. Owner Lou Beraud from Paris said the wine bar is a welcoming place to enjoy good wine and relax with friends.  The Oaklandside
