BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyphy Burger opened a second location on International Blvd in Oakland and added a new spot in East Oakland — its famous smashburgers and loaded fries draw regular crowds. Dough Zone now serves Chinese comfort food in Berkeley, Ginger Indian Cuisine reopened on Telegraph Ave, and Good Times Oakland launched a full bar and kitchen, operating Thursday through Monday.  The Oaklandside

CULTURE NEWS

  • August Wilson's King Hedley II plays at BAM House through November with Oakland's Lower Bottom Playaz and director Ayodele Nzinga. The play — set in 1985 during the crack cocaine epidemic — follows a formerly incarcerated man fighting to regain control of his life.  Oakland Voices
  • Oakland Theater Project is presenting a new version of Cabaret—an adaptation that reimagines political unrest and oppression—for director and choreographer Erika Chong Shuch. The show will run from November 21 to December 14 at FLAX art and design on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.  East Bay Express
  • This week in the Bay Area, a range of arts events will offer punk, jazz, theater, blues, comedy and film shows starting today and continuing through Tuesday. Oakland, Albany and Berkeley will host key performances including a punk set by the Mutants, a cabaret musical, John Mulaney’s comedy show and a rock reunion by The Mars Volta.  East Bay Express
  • Singer Nia Cephas from West Oakland will release her first album, Cosmicpolitan, on Nov. 21 at Amoeba Berkeley—this free event will feature 11 songs that mix bossa nova, samba, reggae and jazz. The 26-year-old beat a serious car crash in 2019 and will perform a free in-store show at 5 p.m. on Friday—she will also tour Brazil for three months to connect with her roots.  East Bay Express
  • Oakland singer Brad Brooks was diagnosed with cancer when a dental assistant spotted a lump during a teeth cleaning, and surgery plus radiation changed his voice; he recorded a new soul-rock album Heavy Lifting and will perform with his band at the Ivy Room on Nov. 21 at 8 p.m.—a gig that follows a sold-out tour.  East Bay Express

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New data from Tipping Point Community shows that the Bay Area poverty rate went from 12.2% to 16.3% in 2023, adding 245,000 people below the poverty line. The report said living costs rose faster than wages, fueling the need for more help with housing and services.  KTVU
  • Developers, city officials, and local scientists are turning old West Oakland warehouses into climate-friendly manufacturing centers that will produce clean energy materials and create new jobs. The projects will support startups in sustainable chemicals and innovative processes to reduce emissions and protect the environment.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oakland hikers can now explore the 30-mile Ohlone Wilderness Trail without a permit, as the East Bay Regional Park District ended permit sales immediately—overnight camping still requires reservations and hikers are advised to plan for sun exposure, limited water and wildlife risks.  San Francisco Chronicle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new Zillow report showed that over 80% of Bay Area homes lost value last year—many still remain worth more than what buyers paid. The report noted that condo prices dropped more sharply while detached homes stayed competitive, leaving first-time buyers with fewer homes to choose from.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • On November 18th in Orlando, the Golden State Warriors lost 121-113 to the Orlando Magic as Stephen Curry scored 34 points and Jimmy Butler added 33 — too many mistakes ended their three-game win streak.
