- ➤ Oakland singer Brad Brooks was diagnosed with cancer when a dental assistant spotted a lump during a teeth cleaning, and surgery plus radiation changed his voice; he recorded a new soul-rock album Heavy Lifting and will perform with his band at the Ivy Room on Nov. 21 at 8 p.m.—a gig that follows a sold-out tour. - ➤ New data from Tipping Point Community shows that the Bay Area poverty rate went from 12.2% to 16.3% in 2023, adding 245,000 people below the poverty line. The report said living costs rose faster than wages, fueling the need for more help with housing and services. KTVU
