  • Amid the ongoing government shutdown, Angel Cakes Bakery is giving away free cakes and cupcakes to local families who struggle to afford a treat. The worker-owned bakery has launched a GoFundMe campaign—each sponsored box earns another donation—to help neighbors during hard times.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Oakland Museum of California has a new exhibit called Good Fire — Tending Native Lands that shows how Native American controlled burns once shaped healthy land and how colonization removed this practice. Curated by Ryder Diaz and Dr. Brittani R. Orona with over 40 Native collaborators, the exhibit will be on display through May 31.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Oakland, Piedmont, Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley and Hayward noticed a different taste in their tap water after the East Bay Municipal Utility District adjusted its blend by pulling more water from local sources and the Pardee Reservoir on the Mokelumne River—changing the water's mineral content. Officials explained that these seasonal adjustments, made as demand shifts, are normal and do not affect water quality.  SFGate

  • Oakland is hosting its first Cocktail Week from today to November 23 with over 20 bars and restaurants offering tastings and themed menus to support local businesses — the event is organized by Savor Oakland and the Oakland Restaurant Collective.  KTVU
  • Oakland’s food scene has shifted as Comfort Collective now occupies Couchdate’s old space at 102 Frank H.
