CULTURE NEWS

  • This week in Oakland, rapper and community activist Bryce Savoy will screen his debut documentary 'Big Bryce Son' on Friday, November 14 at the Rhythm Section Art Lounge with a follow-up Q&A, while residents at Piedmont Gardens host a vintage jewelry sale on Saturday, November 15 that benefits resident programs and the Alameda County Food Bank. • Esperanza Bey, a third-generation Black Oaklander, received the 2025 Nomadic Archivist Project Scholarship to launch her new project Fragments of a Bip— a community archive that links car break-ins to Oakland’s long history of land and labor theft. She and her sister Mariyam Bey are calling for photos from Eastmont Mall in the late 1980s and early 1990s to enrich the project.  Oakland Voices

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Bay Area housing market changed a lot in 2025 as San Francisco homes heated up with an AI boost while East Bay prices, including Oakland's, dropped nearly 11% because buyers feared layoffs and high costs—real estate agents noted market shifts may ease if mortgage rates drop next year—and many families now find buying a home harder.   San Francisco Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The California Department of Education ruled that Oakland Unified created a discriminatory environment for Jewish students and staff—citing delayed responses to complaints and biased instruction—and ordered corrective actions including new training. Attorney Marleen Sacks said many Jewish families have already moved their students to other districts as more complaints remain under review.  KTVU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday, an earthquake swarm hit parts of the East Bay as dozens of small temblors along the Calaveras Fault peaked at magnitude 3.8—researchers noted that this fault, part of the San Andreas system, has produced 6.2 quakes in the past and could produce a 6.7 in the future. Experts added that the unique staccato pattern of the events makes it unlikely that the 3.8 quake was a foreshock to a larger tremor.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A disabled San Leandro couple — who were planning a wedding — lost their SNAP benefits during the government shutdown and are now using a GoFundMe to help buy food as they face financial stress.  ABC7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brady Emry, a Concord native, beat cancer after his junior high diagnosis and now plays for Clayton Valley High as a placekicker while preparing for a college scholarship at Minot State this fall. He underwent 900-plus days of chemotherapy—his journey inspired teammates and showed his strength on the field.  KTVU
  • The Golden State Warriors begin a six-game road trip today in Oklahoma City—aiming to improve a weak road record and test new lineup changes—and will face teams including reigning champion Thunder, the Spurs, and two teams with losing records as Stephen Curry is expected to return from illness soon.  San Francisco Chronicle
