  • HL Peninsula opened a massive dim sum palace in Castro Valley at 3868 Castro Valley Blvd, offering a wide selection of dim sum, dinner entrees, and banquet menus + the restaurant is the largest of its kind in the country. Kopi Bar now serves its signature avocado coffees, coconut cappuccinos, and Indonesian-inspired dishes at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, restarting its popular menu for local food lovers.  The Oaklandside
  • In 2000, Javier Padilla began selling tortas ahogadas from his Oakland home and later teamed with local baker Oscar Gomez-Acevedo to create a crunchy, salty birote salado — the key ingredient — that holds up well under heavy sauce.
