COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks in California reported a surge in meals needed after SNAP benefits nearly ran out amid a government shutdown, and two federal judges had ordered the use of contingency funds on Friday, October 31—ABC7 News Bay Area and its sister stations partnered with local charities to invite donations that provide up to four meals per dollar given.   • Asa Luo, a 10-year-old injured by stray bullets, received a custom Mario Kart costume that transformed his wheelchair into a replica of the video game’s hot rod on Friday at Chabot Elementary School. Magic Wheelchair volunteers and Oakland police officer Cory Hunt built the costume—giving Asa a chance to join his classmates in one joyful Halloween parade despite his past injuries.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Author Alex Werth spent four years researching Oakland’s history of racial overpolicing of Black music and culture to write his new book On Loop—Black Sonic Politics in Oakland. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Oaklandside is launching a reporting fellowship for Oakland high school students that will pay 12 OUSD students a $1,500 stipend and give them hands-on experience working with local reporters. Students must apply by Nov. 30 and fellows' work will be shared at a community event + with local education leaders.  The Oaklandside
  • State education officials found that Oakland Unified School District created a discriminatory environment for Jewish students by circulating maps missing Israel and by allowing a Palestinian flag to fly and hosting a teach-in on the Gaza war without including Jewish or Israeli views—steps that violated district policies. The district must now complete corrective measures, including anti-bias and investigative training by Dec. 20.  The Oaklandside

  • The University of California warned that about 58,000 students may face delayed CalFresh benefits because federal funding remains frozen amid the shutdown. The university is working with campuses and local food banks—expanding food pantries and meal assistance—to support at-risk students.  SFGate
  • County officials raised another $1.5 million for emergency food assistance after two federal judges ruled Friday, Oct 31 that SNAP benefits were wrongly withheld during the shutdown—supporting 179,000 residents on CalFresh.   • Food banks in Oakland and the Bay Area are preparing for increased demand today as federal SNAP benefits stop reloading due to the government shutdown. HEALTH NEWS
