  • Nearly 30 years ago, Markus Bokisch smuggled vine cuttings from Spain when he was stopped at the Port of Oakland and planted them at his Lodi winery. He later gave the vines to UC Davis—sparking a Spanish wine boom that popularized varieties like Albariño and Tempranillo in California.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Amazon will cut over 1,400 jobs in California, with more than 600 Bay Area workers affected by layoffs starting Jan. 26. CEO Andy Jassy said the cuts come as the company shifts to invest in AI and robotics to streamline operations.  San Francisco Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Thieves broke into the storage facility for the Oakland Museum of California early on October 15 and stole over 1,000 items including jewelry, Native American baskets, ivory tusks and photographs—police and the FBI are now investigating the brazen act.  ABC7

  • On Nov. 13 at The New Parkway Theater, three Oakland muralists will join Oaklandside reporter Azucena Rasilla for a discussion on how public art preserves local history and reflects community values—attendees will also enjoy a live performance by the Edna Brewer String Quartet from a local school.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland activist Greg Morozumi, who co-founded Eastside Arts Alliance and worked for unity among diverse groups, passed away in June and left a strong mark on local arts and community programs.   • Amid the federal government shutdown, CalFresh benefits that supported low-income families were fully available for October but will be delayed in November, so households should use funds already on their EBT cards until new benefits are processed.
