  • Local restaurant owners in Oakland are offering free meals for children and discounts for families who use SNAP as the government shutdown continues. With CalFresh benefits set to be cut on Nov. 1, more eateries are planning future initiatives—helping neighbors with food during this challenging time.  ABC7

CRIME NEWS

  • More than 1,000 artifacts including Native American baskets, jewelry, and historic objects were stolen from the museum’s off-site storage facility on Oct. 15 when unknown individuals broke in—prompting a joint investigation by city police, the FBI Art Crime Team, and museum officials.  SFGate

  • On his 89th birthday, Oakland honored Bobby Seale by renaming the intersection of 57th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way in North Oakland, with speeches by Mayor Barbara Lee, Councilmember Zac Unger & Congresswoman Lateefah Simon.   • Bay Area communities continue to honor Día de los Muertos amid recent immigration enforcement concerns by keeping traditions alive with offerings like pan de muerto and altars to remember loved ones.   • Puerto Rican Street Cuisine opened this summer on 23rd Ave in Oakland — Chef Eric Rivera serves classic Puerto Rican dishes such as canoa and stewed pink beans that honor his family traditions.   • Oakland’s Shoong Family Chinese Cultural Center is working to preserve Cantonese as enrollment grows among Chinese families and other local residents amid tight finances and teacher shortages. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An international climate report with input from a local scientist found that 22 of Earth’s 34 vital signs—such as greenhouse gas levels and ice mass—are in critical condition, and researchers say swift measures like cutting fossil fuel use and protecting ecosystems are needed to slow further warming.  SFGate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over the past four years, Oakland has had more than 200 annual overdose deaths while San Francisco has reported a higher rate, particularly among Black residents—both cities are expanding immediate addiction treatment and outreach programs to curb the crisis.
