Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 29th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last Saturday, Vision 980 hosted a block party at Preservation Park where long-time West Oakland residents recalled how I-980 and redlining caused home loss and harm, and they voiced doubts that modifying the freeway will repair past wrongs. Interactive exhibits let attendees review the history and debate if proposed changes will truly benefit legacy residents.  The Oaklandside
  • Bay Area restaurants such as Oakland’s Monster Pho and Puerto Rican Street Cuisine will offer free meals to children on SNAP when benefits run out on Nov. 1 due to a government shutdown—these restaurants will also offer discounts to parents who show their SNAP cards. The effort will help families face a gap in federal food aid.  San Francisco Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week, Oakland and Berkeley will host a packed slate of live events that include punk and samba shows on Thursday, indie and theater performances on Friday, and a Dia De Los Muertos cumbia fest along with jazz and funk concerts on Saturday and Sunday—plus a rock show on Tuesday and an indie performance at Paramount on Wednesday. Tickets range from $20 to over $90 at venues such as Gilman, Crybaby, and Paramount Theatre.  East Bay Express
  • A busy Halloween week is set to take place in Oakland and the broader East Bay with events on Oct. 30 and 31 featuring family trick-or-treat gatherings + adult costume parties, live music and magic shows at community venues in Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and Emeryville. Organizers say activities will offer hands-on art, ghost story readings and costume contests that invite local residents to celebrate the spooky season.  East Bay Express
  • Oakland hosts a week of cultural events as the annual Día de Los Muertos festival celebrates its 30th year in Fruitvale on Nov. 2 with live music and community altars while the Oakland Ballet marks 60 years with a gala and performance on Nov. 1 to support its work. Author John Freeman debuts his new book at Clio's Books today at 7 p.m. with Tommy Orange joining the talk, and Alex Werth will explain his work on Oct. 30 and Nov. 2 at local venues.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 5 million Californians will lose SNAP benefits on Saturday as healthcare premiums rise amid a federal shutdown that leaves many low-income residents at risk—local officials in Oakland and beyond have already allocated funds to support food banks. These measures aim to ease the hardship felt by vulnerable communities as the government impasse continues.  San Francisco Chronicle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • La Loulou opened on Piedmont Avenue in May and offers wine and small bites in a bright, colorful space that looks like a modern Parisian cafe — its playful décor features a disco ball-lined bathroom and visits from owner Lou Beraud’s pomsky, Capuche. The bar has quickly become a local favorite with a monthly wine club drawing 40 members and a menu inspired by classic French flavors.  The Oaklandside

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Monday night, the Golden State Warriors hit 19 3-pointers and shot 53%—building a lead as high as 22 points—to win 131-118 over Memphis at Chase Center.  San Francisco Chronicle
