CULTURE NEWS

  • Carolyn Johnson leads Black Cultural Zone in East Oakland to help stop Black residents from losing their homes and to keep Black culture strong. She works with local partners to plan affordable housing and a food hall near Liberation Park — plans that show her deep commitment to the community.  Oakland Voices

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland firefighters responded on Monday to a smoke alarm at Bret Harte Middle School after light smoke was seen coming from an elevator—prompting a temporary 40-minute evacuation. They confirmed that no fire occurred and there was no risk to anyone or any property.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nicole Brown-Booker, an Oakland disability advocate who uses a wheelchair, sued the city over broken sidewalks that put pedestrians at risk—she accused Oakland of violating the ADA—and won a landmark settlement. The agreement requires fixing 11,000 curb cuts over 15 years and repairing 78,000 damaged sidewalks.  The Oaklandside
  • Alameda County officials agreed to invest $10M in food assistance programs as federal cuts delayed CalFresh funding+ $8.3M will support the local food bank while $1.7M will help provide meals for seniors, with the board set to ratify the decision today.  The Oaklandside
  • BART experienced early Monday morning service interruptions on the Green and Red lines due to trackside equipment problems—resulting in over a 20-minute delay through the Transbay Tube—and riders were advised to use alternative routes. The agency confirmed that the Green line resumed service at about 6:20 a.m., easing the travel delays.  KTVU
  • Airports in the Bay Area experienced flight delays as a government shutdown led to a shortage of air traffic controllers—Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that the staffing issue may lead to more disruptions, and travelers at Oakland and San Francisco remain affected after a brief ground stop at LAX on Sunday.  KTVU

  • Walnut Creek native Jim Morrison made history on Oct 15 when he became the first person to ski down Mount Everest’s north face by navigating the steep Hornbein Couloir—accompanied by filmmaker Jimmy Chin after three attempts. His four-hour descent from just over 1,100 feet below the summit marks a major milestone in extreme mountaineering.  ABC7
