  • More than 10,000 people marched from Wilma Chan Park to the Lake Merritt amphitheater during Oakland's 'No Kings' protest on October 18th + Indivisible East Bay said the crowd remained peaceful. Local leaders Rep. Lateefah Simon and Mayor Barbara Lee warned that the protest challenges authoritarian moves + urged Oaklanders to speak out.  KTVU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starting in 2026, some State Farm renters and condo policyholders in low to moderate wildfire risk areas will be able to keep their coverage when moving within the state — a change that spares them from needing a new insurer. The filing with the California Department of Insurance comes as State Farm works to support its customers while not offering new policies for single-family homes.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Kaiser Permanente health care workers returned to work after a five-day strike at hospitals including the Broadway campus in Oakland— the strike began Tuesday and ended Sunday at 7 a.m. Negotiations will resume on Oct. 28 and 29 to address better pay and safer staffing.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Former NFL running back Doug Martin died at 36 on October 19, leaving fans with memories of his time with the Buccaneers and Raiders. He was twice named to the Pro Bowl—his cause of death remains unannounced.  KTVU
  • Golden State Warriors forwards Jimmy Butler and Jonathan Kuminga practiced Sunday at Chase Center after minor ankle injuries, and they are questionable for Tuesday's opener with the Lakers.
