Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 18th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tuesday night at Piedmont Gardens Oakland seniors listened as the Bob Roden Quintet played jazz music from their era—serving up favorites like A Foggy Day and On the Sunny Side of the Street. Bob Roden and his band have entertained retirement communities for years and will return in December for a New Year’s Eve show.  The Oaklandside
  • After a quiet 2025, Oakland star Zendaya will return in 2026 with a busy slate including A24’s romantic comedy The Drama (set for an April 3 release with Robert Pattinson) as well as roles in Dune: Part Three, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a Barry Jenkins biopic, a voice part in Shrek 5 and HBO’s Euphoria season three returning in spring.  San Francisco Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland Unified School District said drinking water at 70 of 76 schools now meets safety thresholds after testing 6,781 samples following last year's lead problems. Officials will soon launch a new dashboard — showing test results clearly — and an automated system to alert school leaders when testing, repairs, and retests occur.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland Unified and the city have partnered to place violence interrupters—like Youth Alive's Carla Ashford—at high schools to help students resolve conflicts and prevent fights. The program has reduced suspensions and incidents, though school leaders now worry about future funding.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that four plastic bag producers will stop selling grocery bags labeled as recyclable and pay over $1.7 million in fines. He also filed a lawsuit against three other manufacturers, and stores will continue to sell remaining bags until a ban takes effect in January.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • On Friday, Bay Area communities marked 36 years since the 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake that killed 63 people and caused billions in damage during the World Series. Seismologists warned that cuts to USGS Earthquake Science could weaken early warning systems for a future quake along the Hayward fault.  KTVU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents in East Oakland (including Columbia Gardens and Arroyo Viejo) face health risks from nonstop noise from planes, trains and traffic that can cause hearing loss and stress. Two local environmental groups sued the Port of Oakland (citing noise above safe levels) to stop an airport expansion amid long-term health concerns.  Oakland Voices

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jimmy Butler has joined the Warriors after a chaotic season and now says he is focused solely on winning a championship—he uses his role to back team leader Stephen Curry as they aim to bring playoff success to the team.  San Francisco Chronicle
