- ➤ An Oakland design firm is building mobile refuge rooms to offer dignified housing for people leaving custody. - ➤ In September, several East Bay restaurants closed, with Berkeley’s Seoul Hotdog stopping service on Sept 6 and Hayward’s Wah jee Wah shutting down after a rent hike. - ➤ The K-pop group Twice announced it will add a second Bay Area show with a Jan. 18 performance at Oakland Arena—following their already scheduled Jan. 17 concert as part of their world tour. - ➤ Native Americans gathered on Alcatraz Island on Monday for the Indigenous Peoples Day Sunrise Gathering—praying, singing and dancing as they opposed plans to restore the island as a federal prison. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 63 that allows transit leaders in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara to put a sales tax measure on the ballot next year—set at a half cent in most counties and one cent in San Francisco—to keep systems like BART and Muni running amid growing fiscal gaps.
