Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 11th of October.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Temescal Brewing in Oakland said on Friday, October 10 that it is starting a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing—this step will let the brewery fix its debt while it keeps its Telegraph Ave taproom open. The owners noted the filing comes after challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, even though sales are strong and trending upward.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oakland author Tommy Orange was named one of the 2025 MacArthur Fellows on Oct. 8 — he will receive an $800,000 no-strings-attached award paid quarterly over five years.  The Oaklandside

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carla Ashford works as a violence interrupter at Skyline High and uses her past experiences to help mediate student conflicts amid recent incidents like a stabbing and a false weapon report—while the district now faces a funding shortfall as city dollars expire at the end of the school year. • Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne are donating $139 million to support UCSF Children’s Hospital and AI education programs in local schools including Oakland Unified School District—funding that will expand hospital services and build tech training programs in the coming months.  San Francisco Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study finds the Cascadia subduction zone and the northern San Andreas fault have moved together for over 3,100 years—each quake on one may trigger shakes on the other within minutes to hours. The findings give scientists more clues about quake risks along the West Coast without predicting when the next quake will occur.  SFGate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Gavin Newsom signed several bills on October 10 that will impose stricter pet sale rules and ban nonmedical declawing of cats to counter abusive breeding practices. The Stop the Puppy Mill Pipeline legislation builds on his administration’s ongoing efforts to protect animals and increase sales transparency.  KTVU
  • The U.S. Department of Transportation’s emergency rules now bar the DMV from issuing commercial driver licenses to noncitizens and non-permanent residents, leaving drivers such as Vivak Sharma—who has driven trucks for eight years and is seeking asylum—worried about losing a vital income source. The rule, aimed at boosting traffic safety and closing legal loopholes, will impact the Port of Oakland where a driver shortage already delays deliveries.  ABC7
  • California counties reported decreases in homelessness counts, but officials warn that upcoming federal and state funding cuts may reduce shelter and housing support. Local nonprofits and experts fear progress will reverse—leaving fewer resources for those in need.  Oakland Voices

SPORTS NEWS

  • NBA officials updated the rules to stop extra contact on a shooter's hand during a closeout—this change aims to protect players. Coach Steve Kerr said the update will help guard Stephen Curry—who has asked for this rule for years.  San Francisco Chronicle
