ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Seventeen-year-old Amin Noroozi broke his neck during a swimming accident and later died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek—his family alleges poor post-surgery care and a failure to transfer him to UCSF-Benioff Children's in Oakland contributed to his death.  San Francisco Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Condé Nast Traveler named San Francisco as the second best big city and Oakland as the seventh best small city in its Readers’ Choice Awards. Oakland leaders said the honor showed the city’s strong Black heritage—evident in its arts, music and food—and is expected to boost visitor interest.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Oakland Unified School District board approved a budget plan that sets a hiring freeze and reviews job openings to curb a $4 million monthly overspending — measures designed to avoid county intervention while keeping school services intact. District staff will present further cost adjustments at a special meeting on Nov. 19 to address future deficits.  The Oaklandside

  • California Supreme Court Justice Martin Jenkins, the first openly gay member appointed by Gov Newsom, will retire at the end of October—leaving a vacancy for Newsom to name his successor after more than 35 years of service on state and federal courts.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that will require all California rental homes to include a working refrigerator and stove starting Jan. 1—landlord groups warn the mandate may add financial strain while tenant advocates say the rule meets a basic need.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Only two Oakland women have played in the WNBA compared to many NBA stars from the city & experts say uneven funding and few youth programs have limited local girls' opportunities. Local figures stress that without proper support, many talented players had to seek chances outside Oakland.  The Oaklandside
