- ➤ Seventeen-year-old Amin Noroozi broke his neck during a swimming accident and later died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek—his family alleges poor post-surgery care and a failure to transfer him to UCSF-Benioff Children's in Oakland contributed to his death. San Francisco Chronicle

- ➤ Condé Nast Traveler named San Francisco as the second best big city and Oakland as the seventh best small city in its Readers’ Choice Awards. - ➤ The Oakland Unified School District board approved a budget plan that sets a hiring freeze and reviews job openings to curb a $4 million monthly overspending — measures designed to avoid county intervention while keeping school services intact.
