Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 9th of October.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Connoisseur Media will buy four radio stations from Bonneville—KOIT, KBLX, KMVQ and KUFX—pending FCC approval, a move that will add to its group and change the Bay Area radio scene. The deal was announced on Oct. 7 and will close later this year.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Babette in Berkeley, which served as a restaurant, wedding venue, and music space for 14 years, will close on October 31 — owners Joan Ellis and Patrick Hooker said high loan repayments from COVID-19 forced the shutdown; until then, it will host three live music events and one final wedding. The Miranda, a cocktail bar in Oakland known for cheap drinks and live music near the Fox Theater, closed over the weekend without explanation.  The Oaklandside

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oakland author Tommy Orange — recipient of the MacArthur genius grant — was named one of 22 Bay Area awardees on Oct. 8, receiving an $800,000 stipend to support his work over five years. Other local innovators such as photographer Matt Black, UC Berkeley scientist Teresa Puthussery, and Stanford chemical engineer William Tarpeh were also recognized.  San Francisco Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that nearly 5% of Bay Area workers are employed as home health and personal care aides—making it the most common job even though it offers the lowest pay. The study also shows that higher-paid roles like managers and lawyers earn significantly more, highlighting a wide income gap in the region.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A city audit found that Oakland’s 911 call center is understaffed–language barriers and uneven staffing cause long wait times for emergency responses, especially in East Oakland. The report urges the city to hire more bilingual dispatchers and update police beats to meet state targets.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee gave her first State of the City address Tuesday night, 140 days after taking office, and said her 100 Day Plan helped make streets cleaner and public safety stronger. She reported about 40% drops in robberies and motor vehicle thefts, fully staffed fire stations, 30 tons of trash cleared near schools, 30 miles of streets cleaned, and a balanced budget despite a $130 million deficit — though Councilmember Noel Gallo questioned some of the numbers.  KTVU
  • Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell resigned on October 8 after serving less than two years, adding to a history of 11 chiefs in 15 years. Past leaders left amid scandals and firings—city officials say the department needs stable leadership.  ABC7
