BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nonprofit organizations across the nation reported that Oakland-based Flipcause has delayed over $500,000 in donations—leaving some groups without funds to pay employees and continue services. Flipcause CEO Sean Wheeler said on Sept. 4 they are addressing electronic bank transfer issues—while affected groups have filed legal and BBB complaints to recover owed money.  Oakland Voices

CRIME NEWS

  • Mario Juarez, a key figure in an FBI corruption case, applied in 2021 for $225,000 in city grants to upgrade his properties at High and East 12th while an Oakland staffer raised red flags over his company details—sparking concerns about the misuse of city money.  The Oaklandside

CULTURE NEWS

  • At a Chronicle Live event scheduled soon, playwright Jonathan Spector, arts strategist Ted Russell and S.F. Playhouse producing director Susi Damilano will discuss how Bay Area theater can adapt to rising costs and changing audience habits—key issues for sustaining live performance.   • Oakland-born educator Javier Armas shared an excerpt from his book Mam History — a resource for Mayan-Mam students and history fans — to preview the work ahead of two upcoming events at Oakland Tech High School and its library on October 7 and October 9, where free copies will be given and a presentation will be held.   • On October 1st, Oakland's Fruitvale district celebrated its deep Latino history and vibrant community—more than half of its residents are Latino with local projects preserving important stories. Volunteers also prepare for the Dia de Los Muertos celebration expected to welcome over 100,000 people.  KTVU
  • Young Oakland Rising musicians August Lee Stevens, B DeVeaux, and Naima Nascimento rehearsed at 25th Street Recording Studio for their performance at the Oakland Grown: Student Art & Music Festival on Oct. 25 at the Oakland Museum of California. The collective—part of Follow the Music and formed after a Hardly Strictly performance and a Kennedy Center invitation during a tense political period—will use the show to support local music education.  The Oaklandside
  • Bay Area wine merchant Kermit Lynch released his first novel, 'At Poupon's Table,' which acts as a sequel to his classic memoir about wine and the French countryside. The novel follows a wine importer modeled after Lynch (set in 2006) and reflects his long career as he continues to value wines with soul.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Oakland’s Bicyclist and Pedestrian Advisory Commission submitted a letter urging city officials to create a network of safe tree-lined greenways—ways to connect neighborhoods by repurposing car-centric roads—that will improve walking and biking as the General Plan review follows public input that ended Sept 24. They propose a new community investment office and design changes that will be considered in the final plan update in 2027.  The Oaklandside

  • A guide shows how community supported agriculture programs help Oakland residents get fresh fruits and vegetables—boxes cost around $35 and offer delivery or pickup across the East Bay.
