COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over the weekend, Oakland officials broke ground on renovations at Tyrone Carney Park in Sobrante Park—upgrading the half-acre lot with walking paths, play areas and a new lawn. The park will reopen next summer with $3.5 million in city and state funding.  The Oaklandside

CRIME NEWS

  • Former wine buyer Patrick Briones has been charged in Oakland for commercial bribery and conspiracy after he accepted lavish gifts — such as designer handbags, trips, and luxury watches — to influence wine selections in stores.  San Francisco Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tomorrow, California will end the EV decal program that let drivers use HOV lanes with a single occupant — the new rule will enforce standard occupancy limits after a 60-day grace period. Officials warn the change may cause heavy traffic on Bay Area freeways.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • A new global map on BlueCorridors.org uses 30 years of satellite data to track eight whale species and their migration routes so scientists and policymakers can pinpoint where stronger protections are needed. Lawmakers will soon consider expanding a ship-speed reduction program in Bay Area waters after at least 25 whale deaths marked a deadly year—raising concerns over increased threats from heavy shipping and climate change.  SFGate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A $30 million grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission will upgrade MLK Jr. Way in Oakland by adding a cycle track, lights, traffic islands, and bulbouts along the corridor from Jack London Square to Old Oakland. LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Preeti Mistry, a famous Bay Area chef and James Beard Award winner, is now the executive chef at Silver Oak Cellars — a well-known winery in Napa. After a seven-year break from her Oakland restaurant, Mistry will bring global flavors and launch a new wine pairing program with plans for a kitchen garden.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Oakland received $33 million from California’s Homekey program to redevelop Mark Twain Homes on 35th and Lyon avenues into 109 supportive housing apartments. Memar Properties will manage the project—Housing Consortium of the East Bay will provide services and help relocate residents in the building slated for demolition.  The Oaklandside

  • Janelle Salaün, a forward for the Golden State Valkyries, was named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team on Monday—she joins teammate Dominique Malonga as one of the first French-born players to win the honor after leading the team in 3-pointers. She will remain with the team as a restricted free agent and play the offseason in the Czech Republic.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • At media day on September 29, Warriors teammates Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler said that Jonathan Kuminga’s unresolved restricted free agency delayed signing center Al Horford and guard De’Anthony Melton as his qualifying offer nears its Wednesday 9 p.m. deadline. They added they respect his process—expecting a swift resolution before training camp for the upcoming season.  San Francisco Chronicle
