Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 26th of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lucuma, a modern Peruvian restaurant in downtown Oakland, opened on July 25 and offers traditional dishes like ceviche and lomo saltado along with unique choices such as anticuchos de corazón—grilled beef hearts served with pavé potatoes and choclo—in a lively, artful setting. Co-owners Garrett Morris and Renzo Roca planned the menu and designed the space in five months to blend Peruvian heritage with Californian touches.  The Oaklandside
  • Belva Davis, the Bay Area's first Black female news anchor, died at 92 Wednesday morning after a long illness in Oakland. Her long career, which earned her 7 Emmy Awards — and helped open doors for future broadcasters — is honored by her family and community.  KTVU
  • Freddy Corbin — owner of the long-standing tattoo shops — moved the famed Temple Tattoo 13 from a declining 17th Street location to a new 3,000-square-foot space on 43rd Street in Temescal due to rising costs and safety concerns. The merged shop consolidated Temple Tattoo with Tattoo 13 and celebrated its 25th anniversary in June with longtime artists and loyal customers attending.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • The documentary short “Oakland Ilokana” tells the story of Filipino grandmother Marie Rivera Yip — a part of early immigration in Oakland — and her family history. It will premiere on Oct. 4 at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center and also show in San Leandro.  The Oaklandside

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Less than two months after making its final loan payment, Oakland Unified School District faces insolvency as it has spent half of its reserve and overspends by $4 million each month—district leaders warn that ongoing teacher contract issues and a lack of spending cuts could lead to layoffs and school closures. The school board must submit detailed budget adjustments by Oct. 8 to address the crisis.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 2.8 earthquake struck less than 2 miles southeast of the Berkeley Tennis Club just before 6 a.m. Thursday at a depth of just over 5 miles—no damage was reported.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Scientists at USGS and Cal State Polytechnic Humboldt used fiber-optic cables as sensors to map a 7.0 quake off the Humboldt coast last December—employing distributed acoustic sensing—to improve early warning alerts. The study shows that this method may help warn people faster when shaking begins.  SFGate
