- ➤ Oaklandside 510’s ten-episode podcast experiment nearly ended after almost 9,000 downloads as local listeners praised the new way of getting news. - ➤ Oakland artist Sydney Jones collects broken car windows after a car is bipped and turns them into jewelry called Bips. She also repurposes bottles into candles and vases—items sold at Jack London Square and local craft fairs. The Oaklandside
- ➤ Chef Nite Yun—known for her acclaimed Oakland restaurants Lunette and Nyum Bai—has released her debut cookbook My Cambodia that mixes Khmer recipes with personal essays about her journey from a refugee camp to culinary success. - ➤ Violence interrupters in Oakland high schools have reduced suspensions by 10% since 2022, but school and city leaders say the program will end in June 2026 (unless new funding is found). The Oaklandside
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two earthquakes hit the East Bay on Sept. 22—one a 4.3 quake near UC Berkeley at 2:56 a.m. and another a 3 quake at 6:21 p.m.—and USGS seismologist Susan Hough said the odds of another similar quake in the next month are about 3%, with the chance of a larger quake staying very low. SFGate
- ➤ A marine heat wave called NEP25A has grown to cover an area as large as the contiguous US — raising sea temperatures by up to 10°F above normal and disrupting the food web that supports marine life along the California coast. Scientists warn that the warm water could trigger harmful algal blooms and shift species ranges if the trend continues. SFGate

- ➤ A state audit found that Alameda County Department of Children and Family Services did not investigate child abuse reports in time and did not give foster children quick access to health care—raising serious local concerns—and the agency said it will take steps to fix its practices. - ➤ Oakland City Hall considered awarding a $45 million security contract to Allied Universal Security Services but ran into an issue—one of its subsidiaries has federal ICE contracts that clash with the city’s 2019 sanctuary ordinance. - ➤ Governor Gavin Newsom launched a new homeless response task force on Friday that will target encampments on state property, including along highways and under overpasses in Oakland and other major cities. - ➤ California legislators passed Assembly Bill 432 that requires health plans to cover proven menopause treatments and Gov. Newsom must sign by Oct. 12 for the law to help nearly 22 million women—most of California's female population.
