  • On Sept.13, over 500 community members in Moraga gathered to honor Laura Zellmer—a Bay Area mother and three-time double lung transplant recipient who died on July28 at 51. Her strength and caring work united many and continue to inspire the local community.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oakland Style Week will take place this October with five days of art, music, food, culture, and fashion that highlight the city’s creative scene—bringing together local businesses and diverse community talent. The event will feature activities that support Oakland’s vibrant spirit.  ABC7

  • A documentary called 'In the Red' spotlighted the Bay Area Youth EMT program when it was screened on Monday, Sept.22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland with ticket sales benefiting the nonprofit—its 23-year history includes training over 700 students for careers in emergency services.  KTVU
  • Kristofer Madu, a 25-year-old private equity investor and former rapper, spoke at West Oakland Middle School last week to show students that careers in finance and tech can offer high-paying jobs.   • After a year of planning, Oakland’s Rise East initiative has prepared a $100 million plan to boost education and well-being for Black youth in deep East Oakland—focusing on early learning, support for Black educators and schools, and a new entrepreneurship hub.   • The California Supreme Court ended a 10-year legal battle over a planned coal terminal in West Oakland, allowing the developer to move ahead with building a marine terminal. The project now expects to start shipping cargo by 2028—while city officials criticize the ruling and continue to face another lawsuit.  The Oaklandside
