  • Hundreds of dolls remain at a Martinez repair shop because the owner, diagnosed with dementia, could not finish repairs—her family is now working to contact customers and sell any unclaimed items.  ABC7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Bay Area duo Doug Clifton, 69, and Kathy Velez Katz, 70—longtime Deadhead community members—lost their lives in a Utah motorcycle crash on September 16 when a box truck crossed into their lane on State Route 50 near mile marker 136.  San Francisco Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On an August morning, local nonprofit leader Mary Spicer and volunteers found abandoned boats, hazardous chemicals, and trash clogging the Oakland estuary while enforcement remains weak and no single agency has taken charge of cleanup. The city, which received a $3 million NOAA grant in 2024, is finalizing approvals to start a large-scale cleanup operation by the end of 2027—if delays can be overcome.  The Oaklandside

  • Lawmakers passed a bill to fight antisemitism in classrooms that may lead to investigations of teachers for criticizing Israel—Gov. Newsom now faces pressure amid concerns that the law will chill honest discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Oakland and statewide.   • Tim Dupuis, Alameda County's registrar of voters and top election official, will retire next March after nearly 15 years in service & a recent performance review as he focuses on his health and family.   • California and three other West Coast states issued new COVID vaccine guidance recommending shots for people 6 months and older—a broader approach than federal advice. Gov.
