Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 17th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church held a prayer walk to protest fears that the diocese’s bankruptcy plan might lead to the sale of their historic church— a cherished spiritual home by Lake Merritt. They are urging the diocese to provide clear plans on whether the church will merge with another or close down.  The Oaklandside

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Oakland airport officials said Tuesday they spoke with Tesla and Waymo — though no meeting occurred — and that a permit application is open until Dec. 31 for a ride service. If approved, Waymo, which operates with a driver, will be the first to expand its service beyond San Francisco.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland teachers are deciding how to use artificial intelligence in their classrooms as guidance from Oakland Unified School District remains brief—some integrate AI in projects while others avoid it to ensure students use their own thinking, and a draft policy is underway to set clearer rules.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland’s city attorney Ryan Richardson said that private meetings about a new homeless encampment policy broke the state Brown Act—Patricia Brooks and Councilmember Ken Houston met in secret, a violation of the law meant to ensure that public decisions are made openly. No final decisions were made outside a public meeting, and officials are taking steps to improve transparency.  The Oaklandside
  • Alameda County supervisors voted last week not to raise the campaign contribution limits from $20,000 to $40,000 for county officials — the move dropped a proposal by Supervisors Nate Miley and David Haubert that would have also boosted limits for countywide positions and left the current caps unchanged compared to lower limits in nearby areas.  The Oaklandside

SPORTS NEWS

  • After losing Game 1 to the Minnesota Lynx on September 16—Golden State Valkyries must improve their inside defense and cut turnovers to even the series in their home game at San Jose's SAP Center tomorrow.
