  • Meals on Wheels Diablo Region will end its free Breakfast Bag program for over 400 East Bay seniors on Oct. 2 due to government funding cutbacks—volunteers now deliver frozen meals and clients hope to see the program reinstated soon.  KTVU
  • Harjit Kaur, a 73-year-old grandmother with decades of community ties, was detained by ICE on Monday at the San Francisco office while returning a travel application and moved to a detention center in Bakersfield. About 200 local residents gathered in El Sobrante at the intersection of Appian Way and San Pablo Damn Road Friday to show support—while Congressman Garamendi’s office has sent an inquiry urging her release.  KTVU

  • Nonprofits across the country accuse Oakland-based donation processor Flipcause of mishandling funds—Youth In Arts saw unpaid donations rise from $18,000 to over $22,000 after waiting since March. The company said a backlog of transfer requests is causing delays and it expects progress in the coming weeks.  ABC7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists confirmed three new deep sea snailfish species were discovered off the California coast after years of study. One specimen known as the bumpy snailfish was collected in Monterey Bay in 2019 and is now preserved at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco—adding to ongoing deep sea research.  SFGate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • BART said it cannot promise to prevent another systemwide outage as it manages risks in its large transit system, while a spokesperson noted that guaranteeing no future outages is impossible. Officials have not responded to repeated interview requests following the third outage since 2019.  ABC7
  • The California Legislature passed a bill that would let Bay Area voters decide on long-term funding for transit agencies—if Gov. Newsom signs it by Oct. 12, the measure will go to the November ballot in five counties. The plan sets a default sales tax of a half-cent—1 cent in San Francisco—and includes cost-cutting rules to help keep agencies like BART and Muni running.  San Francisco Chronicle
