  • 21st Amendment Brewery in San Leandro will end operations on Nov. 4 as its sales dropped and lender funding ended—while Edith’s Pie in Oakland plans to close this autumn after Thanksgiving and Seoul Hotdog in Berkeley closed on Sept. 6 amid declining business.  The Oaklandside
  • A new map from a modeling firm shows wildfire risk scores across Bay Area ZIP codes—insurers use these scores to decide which homes to cover and set rates. In Oakland, older homes in tight neighborhoods face higher risks of fast-spreading fires.  San Francisco Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • After posting on Sept. 10, Oakland music venue Thee Stork Club banned AI-generated flyers, requiring human-made artwork for its promotional materials. The club—partnering with select artists—will offer discounts to bands needing help making posters.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Chef Mark Liberman at Mago has arranged eight events—starting Sept. 14 and ending Oct. 11—to celebrate Latin American Heritage Month with community partners like La Cocina, Bolita Masa, and Parche. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Immigrant students in Oakland are skipping school because they fear ICE raids—social workers say that many are now forced to work instead of learning. The district is expanding support programs and reinforcing its sanctuary policy to help these students stay safe and attend classes.  The Oaklandside
  • The Oakland school district faces an $80 million deficit next year and spends $4 million more each month than it earns, while teachers ask for a 9% raise retroactive to July 1 and extra help to lower class sizes and workloads. District officials say there is no money for raises or new staff and that budget cuts will be needed by October 8—intensifying labor talks.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a board meeting on Thursday, BART leaders grilled executives over a network storm that caused a systemwide outage. Sylvia Lamb admitted her team was responsible and General Manager Robert Powers promised future work would occur on weekends—confined to specific areas to prevent a repeat incident.  ABC7
  • Assistant City Administrator Harold Duffey lost his request for a restraining order against activist Seneca Scott on Thursday after a judge ruled there was no evidence of threats—Duffey said he will seek a defamation lawsuit to defend his reputation. Scott said his right to free speech was infringed and plans to file a First Amendment suit against Duffey and other city officials.  The Oaklandside
  • Today the California Senate approved SB 105 to help BART and other transit agencies find short-term financing with a deadline of January 10—Gov. Newsom said transit is a lifeline for millions. The bill was passed unanimously after pressure from key lawmakers and transit advocates who feared service cuts.  The Oaklandside

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaiser Permanente, California’s largest private health provider, will offer free Covid vaccinations—available at Oakland Medical Center and other locations—to all members over 6 months old starting September 15. Major drugstore chains in Oakland continue to limit free shots to insured customers per FDA guidelines.  The Oaklandside
