  • Oakland food scientist Ryan Dowdy founded READYBAR—a full-meal bar inspired by his NASA work on compact astronaut food—that is popular among first responders and a growing range of customers.   • Oakland tech company Flipcause has withheld hundreds of thousands of dollars from nonprofits, causing missed payrolls, layoffs, and cancelled programs that strain local services. CULTURE NEWS

  • Oakland’s Culture Makers event will feature advocates from Centro Legal de la Raza, Street Level Health Project and ARTogether who plan to share immigrants' stories and provide local resource information on Sept. 18 at New Parkway Theater at 474 24th Street—panel discussions and spoken word performances are set from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Guests who arrive early will receive an original art print.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland Voices received a $15,000 grant from the East Bay Community Foundation to support correspondents Dera R. Williams, Kristal Raheem, and Tanna Samone who will create original arts stories each week through December.   • Documentary In The Red: Changing Lives to Save Lives will screen at Grand Lake Theatre on Monday, Sept 22 at 6:30 p.m.—it follows six youths of color who trained with Wellington Jackson’s Bay Area Youth EMT Program to become first responders.   • At a recent meeting, Oakland Unified School District board members heard from SEIU Local 1021 and other staff who have long worked at low wages amid a tight budget. The board will finalize a restructuring plan by Oct.8 — as debates continue over balancing rising enrollment with calls for fair pay — to address a looming structural deficit.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland officials debated Councilmember Houston’s proposal to end the shelter requirement before clearing encampments—raising concerns that the policy risked a state grant—during a seven-hour meeting on Wednesday evening. The city scheduled a special committee meeting to review amendments before making a final decision.  The Oaklandside

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medi-Cal will change soon as new asset limits, dental cuts, and work rules will be introduced beginning in 2026 and 2027, putting at least 3.4 million Californians at risk of losing coverage. Oakland residents are advised to update their contact information to receive timely notifications about these upcoming changes — mandated by both state and federal law.  San Francisco Chronicle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Several new restaurants will open this fall across the Bay Area — projects include a Japanese-Italian spot near the Transamerica Pyramid and a bakery at Jack London Square in Oakland.   • Checkers—a small pot-bellied pig weighing 17 pounds who may grow to over 100 pounds—is available for adoption at the Peninsula SPCA in Oakland; interested adopters should call the center to set an appointment and ensure they have a large yard and access to veterinary care while checking local ordinances.  KTVU

  • The 2025 NBA All-Star Game at Chase Center generated about $328 million in direct economic impact for local businesses and supported roughly 1,700 jobs—142,881 fans came from 40 states and 44 countries.
