CRIME NEWS

  • A 28-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday on San Pablo Avenue after buying food from a street vendor near his Oakland home; his family said he had recently moved from San Francisco—police are investigating the random gunfire.  KTVU
  • Over the weekend, a series of shootings in downtown Oakland left 2 dead and several injured while a senior shelter on Martin Luther King Jr. Way suffered bullet holes and a shattered window—police are investigating the events.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week Oakland hosts the 23rd Oakland International Film Festival which launches today at Grand Lake Theatre along with a screening of Paper Bag Plan running from Sept. 12 to Sept. 17 with a Q&A session. More events include Black Film Unscreened and Unstreamed featuring Oakland filmmakers every other Thursday, the Oakland Chinatown Night Market on Sept. 13, Ben Rosenblum’s Brazilian jazz show on Sept. 12, and Ariana Grande concerts scheduled at Oakland Arena in 2026.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bay Area transit agencies may face big service cuts if a $750M state loan is not approved soon — recent outages and budget gaps have raised concerns over safe commutes. Gov. Newsom and lawmakers are now in talks to set clear, strict terms to avert further disruption.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • A technology upgrade caused a nearly seven-hour shutdown on Friday morning that disrupted commuter rides and raised concerns, and BART directors vowed to investigate the failure — promising an update at the board meeting on Thursday to address the issue.
