Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 8th of September.

CRIME NEWS

  • Oakland police investigated separate shootings that killed two and injured four early Saturday and caused stray bullet damage to local businesses, including a hair salon on San Pablo Ave whose windows and TV were hit as shown by the owner’s photos — the investigation continues.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oakland Pride celebrated its 15th anniversary on Sunday with a parade along Broadway that ended at Frank Ogawa Plaza—thousands enjoyed live performers, vendors, and a family zone with a dance pavilion and kids’ activities.  San Francisco Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A $1.6 million Powerball ticket sold at a Circle K in Dublin made one East Bay player one of California’s top winners in Saturday night’s drawing — another $1.6 million prize went to a ticket from Love’s Travel Stop in Tehachapi as over 1.5 million winning tickets were sold statewide.  San Francisco Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Thousands of fans filled the Coliseum in Oakland for a historic soccer friendly between Japan and Mexico that ended in a 0-0 draw with the parking lot turned into a party zone. The Mexican team’s truck was broken into earlier in the week—yet the players remained upbeat as they look ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.  KTVU
  • Joe Mathews recounted his 18-season journey in fantasy football—a game he traced to Oakland Tribune journalists in 1962—and explained how his long-held addiction and changes in the game have made him plan one last season. He noted that rising legal questions over online betting sites and a recent championship win have kept him from quitting the sport.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • On September 6, the Oakland Ballers used a new AI app called AaronLytics at Raimondi Park to help set lineups and in-game calls. Manager Aaron Miles said his calls matched the app's well but glitches made him update live stats and game rules.  San Francisco Chronicle
