EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Oakland Museum of California announced that free field trips will be offered to Oakland Unified classes—covering 34,000 students—for the next three years as a new grant pays for program and travel costs. Teachers can choose guided or self-guided tours on subjects like art, science, and local history to help students learn about their local heritage.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • David 'Chicken' Nesmith, a beloved Oakland conservation leader who fought to protect local water from damming and mentored local youth, died March 26—he will be honored with a memorial celebration on September 14 at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.  The Oaklandside
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California joined the Northwest Wildland Fire Fighting Compact—an agreement that shares firefighting personnel and equipment with eight U.S. states and five Canadian provinces—to address federal firefighting staff cutbacks amid growing fire threats.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • BART trains did not run Friday morning due to a computer equipment problem that began with network upgrade work—causing commuters to seek alternative transportation. Heavy traffic was reported near the Bay Bridge toll plaza at 6 a.m. as a result of the outage.  KTVU
  • California’s Clean Air Vehicle decal program expires Sept. 30, which means that starting Oct. 1, eligible EV owners in Oakland will lose solo access to HOV lanes and FasTrak discounts—officials advise drivers to carpool or use rideshare services to avoid extra toll charges.  San Francisco Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Golden State Valkyries rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat the Dallas Wings 84-80 on Sept. 4 and clinched a playoff berth as the first expansion team in WNBA history. Their first home playoff game will be held in San Jose on Sept. 16 or 17 (Chase Center conflict) as Oakland Arena (private event) is unavailable.  San Francisco Chronicle
