CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday evening at Lakeshore at Brooklyn, a crash involving ATVs and dirt bikes left one person injured as the fire department responded and took the victim to a hospital while over 100 people gathered at the scene.  KTVU
  • A Bay Area resident returned home from Burning Man after a wild week that saw an unexpected baby birth on Wednesday and a homicide on Saturday under investigation—officials noted these events amid the festival’s tough conditions.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • A 20-year-old mural depicting a nude Ohlone man at the corner of 41st Street and Piedmont Avenue will be painted over after community feedback called its nudity offensive—property management explained the change aims to maintain a more inclusive space. The artwork by Rocky Rische-Baird has long served as an important local historical marker.  KTVU
  • Children's Fairyland celebrated its 75th birthday today at Lake Merritt in Oakland as families enjoyed a festive parade and community gathering at the park (opened in 1950) that once hosted a memorable visit by Walt Disney (highlighting its lasting magic) and remains a cherished local landmark.  ABC7

  • Bay Area filmmakers Jen Bradwell and Todd Boekelheide released the PBS documentary Make a Circle, which streams today and follows the struggles of California childcare providers facing low pay and tough negotiations. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 27, state lawmakers held a hearing to discuss the deaths of three workers at a San Leandro scrap metal company and questioned Cal-OSHA's enforcement of workplace safety, with Assemblywoman Liz Ortega (D-San Leandro) saying she would introduce a bill to hold employers accountable. The hearing came after a state audit found low prosecution rates and insufficient fines for past safety violations (the audit also revealed that the company had been fined repeatedly over the years).  KTVU
