  • Federal prosecutors in Oakland indicted Abraham Shafi, 38, on eight felony charges including six counts of wire fraud after he defrauded investors of $170 million from his defunct IRL app by misusing funds for personal expenses—such as a lavish wedding.  San Francisco Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ariana Grande announced her 'Eternal Sunshine' tour will stop at Oakland Arena on June 6 and 9 next summer, giving Oakland fans her first post-pandemic live show. Ticket presales will begin on Sept. 9 and general sales on Sept. 10—marking her return to touring.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Barbara Lee has now served 100 days and faces challenges—low police staffing, homelessness, and federal threats—while she highlights drops in crime and millions in funding for housing. The Oakland police union still says that officer shortages remain despite faster emergency responses.  KTVU
  • Christian Peeples, the longest-serving AC Transit board member, died in his sleep on August 7 at his home at the age of 78—he was known for his push for electric buses and dedication to public transit. The board has started a process to replace him, with applications opening on September 2 and candidates meeting on October 27 to fill the vacancy.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington, appointed in October 2023, discussed his nearly two years in office and how staffing shortages and rising overtime challenge his department.
