- ➤ Residents in an Oakland neighborhood expressed worry after a large sideshow on Piedmont Avenue began early Sunday with illegal fireworks, gunfire and fires that led police to issue 21 citations and tow four vehicles — they are urging city leaders to install concrete barriers and speed bumps to prevent similar chaos. - ➤ Former Mayor Sheng Thao faces federal bribery and conspiracy charges and her attorneys plan to survey Oakland residents about possible jury bias—she will file a motion to move the trial out of town by Sept. 11 with the trial set for mid-2026. The Oaklandside

- ➤ Oakland Unified School District will post a request for proposals tomorrow, Aug. 29, to hire a search firm that will conduct a national search for a new superintendent by mid April—proposals must be submitted by Sept. 22. - ➤ Environmentalists in West Oakland have warned that Senate Bill 404 — which would reclassify hazardous waste from metal recycling — poses a dangerous loophole that may lower safety rules at plants like Radius Recycling.
