CRIME NEWS

  • Two sideshows in Oakland and Richmond drew hundreds early Sunday with a car set on fire at a CVS lot and a police union—led by Huy Nguyen—saying Oakland was short on patrol vehicles while no arrests or injuries were reported.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • POOR Magazine will screen the film Crushing Wheelchairs on Thursday, August28 at 8 p.m. outside the Self-Help Hunger Program at 61st and Adeline in Oakland—this film portrays the brutality of government sweeps on unhoused people using real accounts.  Oakland Voices
  • Irish rap trio Kneecap cancelled its 15 U.S. tour dates, including the Oakland show at Fox Theater on Oct. 28, due to a terror charge against rapper Mo Chara. The band said it will share something special for US fans next week and plans to return with a bigger tour when legal issues are resolved — performances in Canada will continue as scheduled.  San Francisco Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of Oakland teachers are using Donors Choose to raise funds for classroom supplies like pencils, crayons and notebooks while many pay out of pocket. Teacher Jenny Aguilar-Ceja is planning a cozy classroom corner for her 11th grade students+community efforts continue as funds remain short for these projects.  The Oaklandside
  • Transitional kindergarten is available to every child with a fourth birthday on or before September 1 for the new school year. Oakland Unified has added seven new programs and districts received millions in grants to hire teachers and set up play-based classrooms+ enrollments are expected to rise as parents save on daycare costs.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland homeowners with wood-framed homes built before 1980 in high-risk zip codes may get up to $3,000 for retrofit upgrades through the state’s Earthquake Brace — Bolt program and low-income households up to $7,000; applicants must wait for approval before obtaining a building permit as those not selected are added to a wait list.  The Oaklandside

  • Oakland caterer Olivia Colt of Salt and Honey catering shared meal-prep hacks to help families cut grocery bills that average $1,600 a month—she explained that prepping vegetables, crunchy toppings and sauces can make tacos, grain bowls and breakfast cookies easier to prepare.  KTVU

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Maya Motel in Temescal is set to be converted into 23 supportive housing units for formerly homeless residents using $17.6 million in funds from the state, city and county. Danco will redevelop the property and Operation Dignity will run the housing program as part of California’s Homekey initiative—making it the 10th Homekey project in Oakland.  The Oaklandside
