CRIME NEWS

  • Before dawn on Wednesday, burglars used a U-Haul truck to ram Sterling Bank and Trust and Cathay Bank on Webster Street in Oakland Chinatown, sparking community anger and an ongoing investigation—police are following leads to identify the suspects.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Seoul Gomtang in Oakland serves tteokguk, a hot rice cake soup with beef broth, rice cakes, seaweed, and sides like kimchi and cucumber salad — a dish usually eaten on New Year’s Day but offered all year. • The San Leandro Dahlia Society will host its annual dahlia competition at Lakeside Park Garden Center on Aug. 30 + Aug. 31, where longtime growers Chris Dix and Curtis Maxwell have been preparing the blooming flowers at The Gardens at Lake Merritt. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Community leaders and activists met Thursday night at a Black Men United event to discuss plans in case the National Guard is deployed in Oakland, saying a military presence may worsen tensions. • Today, Oaklandside released a new 510 podcast episode that looks into how the city awards millions in contracts—host Tasneem Raja talks with reporter Eli Wolfe about fairness and transparency. HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaiser nurses protested at the San Rafael facility on Aug 21st against planned layoffs that will cut 41 nursing roles and one art therapist position in October—warning that a reduced and already stretched workforce may lead to longer wait times and canceled appointments.
