  • After the Oakland Marriott City Center defaulted last year, new general manager Kevin Boland is working to improve business—he said new ownership and planned upgrades will help attract more guests and meetings downtown. CRIME NEWS

  • Early Wednesday morning, smash-and-grab thieves targeted Sterling Bank and Trust at 735 Webster Street and Cathay Bank at 710 Webster Street in Chinatown by using a U-Haul to break the windows—police are investigating with no arrests yet reported.  KTVU
  • Alameda County prosecutors announced today that they will dismiss felony charges against eight of 11 defendants in connection with the 2021 death of Maurice Monk — a 45-year-old schizophrenic man who died after food and medicine were left in his Santa Rita Jail cell — while the case against three jail deputies will continue as his sister said more staff should be charged.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Today, Lucy Blue opened at 468 19th St. in Uptown Oakland near the Fox Theater—chef Michele McQueen and Town Fare will serve drinks and small plates. Meanwhile, Good Vybes and Brews is soft opening in the Jack London district with organic coffee and matcha without tipping.  The Oaklandside
  • On August 14th, the Chronicle Food & Wine team blind-tasted 20 everything bagels from Bay Area shops to judge their flavor, texture, and overall appeal. The panel named the bagel from Loveski Deli (score 8.1) as the top pick in a contest that highlighted a diverse range of styles.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Police union leaders in Oakland said they were frustrated by staffing problems as more than 100 officers were on leave and many left each month for other agencies. Mayor Barbara Lee said the city will hire more officers to reach 700, but Oakland was ranked the second most dangerous place using FBI crime data from 2024—raising concerns about public safety.  ABC7
