COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Oakland Animal Services has updated its policy to manage a 95% increase in animal intakes by reducing shelter stays for strays and encouraging foster care while cutting fees. CRIME NEWS

  • ICE has sharply increased arrests of suspected immigration violators in Northern California this summer—evidenced by an East Oakland raid today that detained at least six individuals, many with no prior convictions—as part of a broader enforcement push.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • A high school teacher in Sobrante Park said his students understand power because they face everyday challenges like crowded housing and safety issues. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland’s City Auditor Michael Houston is asking residents to fill out a survey by August 22 to help shape his office’s 2025-2026 work plan—available in English, Spanish and Chinese—that asks for input on which city programs need more efficiency and fairness.  The Oaklandside
  • A new report shows that Oakland’s inaugural committee raised $290,052 and spent $176,453 on Mayor Barbara Lee’s June celebration at Jack London Square—major donations came from Kaiser, the nurses union, and PG&E. The group will donate over $100,000 in leftover funds to local nonprofits that serve Oakland youth and the community.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland will cut red tape for business permits by easing rules in downtown, Uptown and near Lake Merritt BART Station for small businesses like medical offices and shops. The rule changes will also streamline alcohol permits and allow cannabis cafes—pending City Council approval—aimed at boosting local economic growth.  The Oaklandside
