CRIME NEWS

  • Oakland police reported that a fatal shooting in West Oakland on Tuesday morning resulted in one death and they are investigating the incident.  San Francisco Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, authorities issued an air quality advisory for Oakland as toxic smoke from the Gifford Fire (mega fire) drifted north from the Central Coast and advised residents to stay indoors and close windows. About 4,000 firefighters worked to contain 33 percent of the blaze that burned over 120,000 acres in Los Padres National Forest.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two government agencies launched investigations last year into BRAVE Bay Area, a long-running support center for sexual assault survivors, after whistleblower documents and staff reported repeated layoffs and alleged falsification of grant data. The board said the nonprofit will close at the end of September due to economic shifts—while some former employees claim the shutdown is meant to hide financial mismanagement—leaving survivors with fewer support options.  The Oaklandside

HEALTH NEWS

  • Berkeley was named the healthiest place to live in the nation by Niche—beating 229 other U.S. areas with high marks for low smoking rates and easy access to doctors based on Census and CDC data. The ranking also noted that the city scored lower on crime and housing.  KTVU
