Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 12th of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ireicho book, which honors over 125,000 Japanese American survivors of WWII incarceration, is on a two-year nationwide tour that invites survivors and descendants to stamp their names in remembrance. Organized by the Irei Project, the tour stops near Oakland and reminds communities of history’s lessons—helping them understand the need to remember the past.  San Francisco Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bay Area schools started earlier this fall, and Oakland schools began classes two days sooner than in past years to finish the semester before winter break—local officials said the change aligns academic schedules with testing needs and ensures teachers receive paychecks on time. Parents, students, and educators are adjusting to a shorter summer amid a trend that reshapes the traditional school calendar.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Tens of thousands of students returned to Oakland schools on Monday as interim superintendent Denise Saddler, a Bay Area educator for over 40 years, began touring nine campuses after the board fired her predecessor Kyla Johnson-Trammell. The district also named its first executive director of safety—an appointment designed to advance the new safety plan after campus police were removed five years ago.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Barbara Lee announced a working group that will meet later this month to study whether Oakland should rewrite its charter to improve accountability and transparency in government. The panel—led by Ernestine Nettles and Sean Elsbernd—will report its recommendations by January so voters can decide on any changes.  The Oaklandside
  • AC Transit announced that 104 bus lines across the East Bay will see service changes starting Sunday due to a $41.5 million deficit and lower ridership, with some routes adding stops while others lose them—riders at Oakland's Uptown Transit Center praised improved bus stops even as updated signage remains pending.  KTVU

HEALTH NEWS

  • COVID-19 levels in Bay Area wastewater jumped 32% from July 8 to Aug. 3, and experts warn that cases will rise when students return to school on Aug. 18—Dr. Monica Gandhi of UCSF expressed concern over vaccine booster access for at-risk groups. Local health officials will monitor the situation closely as summer ends.  SFGate

REAL ESTATE NEWS
