CRIME NEWS

  • Parole agent Joshua Byrd was shot and killed in an Oakland parole unit on Thursday at about 12:50 p.m.—his body was carried on a law enforcement procession from the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau to Sacramento's East Lake Funeral Home—and suspect Bryan Keith Hall was arrested and is now facing first-degree murder charges.  ABC7

  • Mosswood Meltdown in Oakland started on Saturday, July 19 at Mosswood Park with loud shows by Diesel Dudes and Bleached. Hosted by John Waters for his 11th year, the two-day event features 17 acts—headlined by Devo and including local groups like Shannon and the Clams.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered at Don Biddle Park on Saturday to protest plans to reopen the former women's prison in Dublin as an ICE detention center — Japanese American groups fear it could repeat the internment of families during World War II. Local officials said there are no current plans for the facility, and protesters called for clear federal oversight.  ABC7
  • Bay Area garbage collectors resumed work after Teamsters Local 439 reached a tentative five-year contract with Republic Services that offers better wages and lower health care costs for landfill employees. Local officials and mayors said the agreement will restore regular garbage collection and address public health concerns from the weeks-long strike—workers from several cities joined in solidarity.  San Francisco Chronicle
