CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Nadia Michelidaki on July 18th for allegedly arranging the murder in Athens of UC Berkeley professor Przemyslaw Jeziorski amid court documents that detailed her use of threats and financial coercion and noted that her partner, Christos Dounias (who confessed to shooting Jeziorski), assaulted him during custody exchanges.  ABC7
  • San Leandro police reported that on July 17 a woman walking her two dogs with her boyfriend on East 14th and Williams streets was fatally shot during an altercation at around 11:00 p.m.—a 21-year-old suspect was later arrested in Dublin and police said the incident is not linked to a similar dog walking shooting last month.  ABC7
  • Oakland police said parole agent Joshua Lemont Byrd, 40, was shot and killed at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation building on Edgewater Drive on Thursday just before 1 p.m.—officers later detained suspect Bryan Keith Hall, 48, who had been recently paroled.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • An exhibit at the Oakland Museum opened today that documents Black displacement and resistance through local art — including works by architect June Grant and artist Adrian Burrell — and archival pieces that show the East Bay’s history. The exhibit runs until March 1 and invites Oakland residents to rethink the city’s future through its activist past.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Republic Services and the sanitation union reached an agreement to end the garbage strike that disrupted waste pickup in 25 northern California cities, with service halted on July 8. Pickup will resume today as workers return to work—officials say the deal is crucial for public health.  KTVU
  • Oakland city council and staff remain divided over awarding a $45 million contract to secure the city's public facilities—staff plan to bring updated recommendations in late September. The debate pits national firm Allied Universal against local Marina Security as council members question each company's record.  The Oaklandside
  • Mayor Barbara Lee announced on Thursday that Oakland will invest in new sidewalk and curb ramp improvements to make streets accessible for people with disabilities—pending judge approval in early December. The plan will add about 11,000 curb ramps in 15 years and repair sidewalks in 78,000 locations over 25 years as part of a legal settlement.  The Oaklandside
