Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Oakland hosts free events including a morning coffee tasting at The Caffè by Mr. Espresso and Friday night music at OMCA; on Saturday, there will be a farmers market at Splash Pad Park, a teach-in at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and a skate session with a melon jubilee at Liberation Park, while Sunday offers a Jack London Square farmers market, a Black History celebration at Jasper P. Driver Plaza, and a picnic concert at Lakeside Park—each event giving locals a chance to join community activities.  Oakland Voices

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters worked to stop an intense fire in a vacant apartment building on 9th Street near the Lake Merritt BART station in Oakland’s Chinatown on Wednesday night — crews had dealt with similar fires before.  ABC7

CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect was taken into custody after a parole officer was shot Thursday afternoon on the 7700 block of Edgewater Drive near a CDCR building in East Oakland—police later apprehended the suspect near 90th Avenue and International Boulevard while the officer was taken to Highland Hospital.  ABC7
  • Residents in Oakland living in vehicles report that a suspect has been firing small silver balls—roughly the size of marbles—at their vehicles while they sleep, shattering windows and causing fear, and police are investigating the attacks that began three weeks ago.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 15, the DOJ requested that sheriffs in major California counties provide lists of noncitizen inmates and details of their cases. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said it has not yet received any such request for Santa Rita Jail — officials noted that they only honor judicial warrants.  The Oaklandside
  • Developers have proposed to allow housing on Parcel N of the 64-acre Brooklyn Basin project, a change that would reduce approved park space and upset rowers and community members at a recent public meeting — critics say the plan may limit park access and risk Measure DD funding. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will vote on the proposal on September 10 as the city council considers the recommendation.  The Oaklandside
