Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 23rd of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A skate park on Fourth Street in Berkeley was renamed in honor of Terrence McCrary — a beloved skateboarder killed by stray gunfire in Oakland in 2016 — during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Saturday as his family and local leaders honored his legacy.  KTVU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • PG&E restored power to most Bay Area customers on Saturday morning after planned wildfire-season shutoffs were put in place. Crews used aerial and ground patrols—clearing hazards before restoring service—and the utility had expected full power restoration by Sunday evening.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland’s city government may change soon as the Oakland Charter Reform Project—led by a veteran city administrator with 39 years of experience—calls for a simpler system that lets officials work faster. Mayor Barbara Lee will talk with residents before forming a task force to plan reforms for a June 2026 ballot vote.  San Francisco Chronicle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Affordable housing providers in California have seen insurance costs jump up to 500% in recent years, forcing layoffs and cuts that hurt services (some now cover most claims out of pocket). Advocates warn that if these high costs continue, new projects like a senior housing complex in East Oakland may be delayed and lawmakers may consider new relief measures.  San Francisco Chronicle
