CRIME NEWS

  • Oakland police are investigating several commercial burglaries — linked to a silver Honda with tinted windows and black wheels — that occurred on Sunday morning when suspects wearing black clothing broke into four businesses within 90 minutes, including Pho Mekong Restaurant, leaving owners frustrated and calling for greater safety measures.  KTVU

Therapy session at Dezi's Lounge in Oakland where award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler shared his mental health struggles and admitted he felt anxious before speaking publicly—he explained that his busy schedule and past experiences have made it hard to relax.   • Ahmed Muhammad, a 22-year-old Stanford graduate, celebrated his June 15 commencement with family and mentors who supported his non-profit Kits Cubed—he credited his Oakland community with sparking young people's interest in science. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at Lawrence Livermore Lab are developing a new way to track earthquakes using fiber optic cables. They recorded vibrations from a 3.9 magnitude quake in the Dublin Hills with a device the size of a microwave — a method that may soon serve as an early warning tool — and plan to scale the system for more areas.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PG&E turned off power in part of Contra Costa County yesterday because high winds and dry conditions raised fire risks, and the utility said up to 1,000 customers in parts of Contra Costa — Alameda and Santa Clara counties could face outages through Saturday. PG&E is monitoring the situation and will restore power when it is safe.  ABC7
  • Alameda County is exploring funds to extend a hotline for immigrants who need help with ICE (currently available Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and will seek extra funding in coming weeks to support a full 24-7 service. Community advocates and county supervisors Nate Miley and Elisa Marquez back the plan amid growing concerns over increased enforcement.  KTVU
