CRIME NEWS

  • Two years ago, a woman was fatally shot in her car in East Oakland and police are still searching for her alleged killer — her boyfriend Brandon Bell, who was charged in 2023 after an argument but has not been caught.  KTVU
  • Oakland police issued 10 citations and towed three cars after unruly sideshows spread across several intersections and set three cars ablaze — officers are now tracking down other vehicles.  San Francisco Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kazuo 'Kaz' Kajimura, the founder of Yoshi's, died on Sunday after battling dementia— he started the club in 1972 with key locations in Oakland, San Francisco, and Claremont. A tribute on social media praised his tireless work ethic and noted that a celebration of life will be held on July 14.  KTVU
  • Today, the Oakland Museum of California hosts the Futureproof Dinner as part of the Juneteenth festival by Hella Creative and the Last Supper Society. The dinner features a five course meal by Black chefs who will use AI to turn spoken words into images+ the event celebrates Black heritage and a hopeful future.  The Oaklandside
  • San Francisco Jewish Film Festival will open on July 17 at Herbst Theatre with Noam Shuster-Eliassi’s film and stand-up performance that address the Middle East conflict, rising antisemitic attacks, and cuts in federal arts funding — a bold move to confront tough issues. The festival runs through Aug. 3 across five venues including Piedmont Theatre in Oakland and will honor Daveed Diggs with the Freedom of Expression Award on July 31.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Oakland’s San Antonio installed community-made speed bumps and tire islands to slow traffic and stop sideshows, but the city removed them as safety hazards after an earlier car accident caused a flip—neighbors say the measures worked since sideshows returned within 24 hours. City officials have approved $1.4 million for permanent, approved traffic-calming fixes and are designing a temporary treatment in the coming weeks while residents warn that the ongoing chaos must be addressed quickly.  The Oaklandside

HEALTH NEWS

  • California lawmakers are considering delaying an IVF insurance mandate set for July 1 so that large employer plans may not cover infertility diagnosis and treatment until January 2026, leaving nine million people uncertain about their care. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state regulators need more time to guide insurers on specific services (such as embryo storage) to ensure uniform coverage.  San Francisco Chronicle
