- ➤ On Sunday morning, dozens joined sideshows at three Oakland locations—witnesses reported three cars set on fire—and police dispersed the crowds as fire crews responded to the incident. ABC7
- ➤ A man in his 40s was found fatally shot Saturday morning in San Leandro while still holding his dog's leash—police said he was discovered at 8:23 a.m. near Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street after a neighbor reported a gunshot at 11:15 p.m.—and his dog was taken to a temporary shelter. KTVU
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two gray whales were found dead along Richmond's shoreline on Thursday and Saturday, which alarmed wildlife experts and local residents. The Marine Mammal Center recorded more than a dozen whale deaths in the Bay Area this year — a necropsy is underway on one whale — as officials investigate if boat strikes or natural causes led to the deaths. - ➤ Bay Area lawmakers announced legislation on Monday that bans law enforcement from covering their faces during operations. The bill, proposed by State Senators Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguin, requires officers to be identifiable by their uniform or other means. KTVU
- ➤ Records show that law enforcement agencies across Southern California shared automated license plate reader data more than 100 times last month with ICE and Border Patrol—violating a ten-year-old state law. Civil liberties groups and state officials are calling for a review to ensure that agencies follow the law. KTVU
- ➤ Landlord Beth Berlin-Stephens received a $2,257 bill for late fees, penalties and interest despite having regularly registered her rental unit and reported her income—Oakland never sent a notice before fining her. City officials explained that unintegrated tax and rental registration systems led to the error as part of efforts to recoup revenue to help close the city’s deficit. The Oaklandside
- ➤ Starting July 1, new California laws will change subscription cancellation methods, Airbnb cleaning fee disclosures, pet insurance rules, remote court access, and more; they will also require health plans to cover fertility treatments and add the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to student ID cards (approved by state lawmakers and Gov.
